Ángel Mateo Charris (Cartagena, Spain, 1962)
Fine Arts Degree from the San Carlos Faculty at the University of Valencia, 1985.
Cultured, traveller and reflective, Ángel understands art as something more than just a technique. This renowned Spanish artist has always been open and receptive to the diversity of sources and stylistic options. His most immediate influences are Pop art, Edward Hopper or the cultural visuals in cinema, art history or literature. Early in his career he portrayed his opinions through a biting sense of humour. In the nineties he began to create series that combined text and image, creating a sort of parallel worlds which gradually introduces a more personal contemplation on time and an individual’s loneliness as a backdrop for his representations.
As other artists before him have done, his interests also include theatre, interior design, cinema, architecture and comics. This is why he involves himself in projects that transfer his canvas onto other mediums. Some examples of this are his paintings for the Dome at Cartagena’s Polytechnic University; the illustrations done for his artist books (with his own texts or from recognised critics); for Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness or the Barcelona’s 2006-2007 Grand Liceo Theatre Opera Season book.
His works have been seen in halls and museums throughout the world. In Spain he has worked with the My Name’s Lolita Art Gallery since 1990 and has collaborated with galleries including Senda, Siboney, Marisa Marimón, Sen, Trama or La Naval.
